Mary Strong
Nominated for an Emmy as the host of the Fox Sports Net show Dig and the Directv Sports Mix, Mary Strong discovered her love for broadcasting while working at her University radio station. Not long after graduating, her career in television journalism took off. She traveled the country working for NBC and CNN.
Strong was a NCAA Division I scholarship volleyball player at Loyola Marymount University, and eventually played professionally on the AVP pro-beach volleyball tour.
After working in news for a number of years, she combined her love for sports with her passion for storytelling by becoming a sportscaster for Fox Sports Network, Directv and more recently, NFL Network. “Sports has always been my passion. It was thrilling to be able to bring my knowledge of broadcasting to something I’ve always loved. I would go from serving for game point on the AVP, straight to the sideline. It felt great to be reporting on something I was passionate about.”
Strong’s extensive journalistic experience has garnered her an Edward R. Morrow Award for her work in continuous LIVE news coverage both as a field reporter and anchor. You can now find her on the NFL Network anchoring LIVE news coverage for “NFL Network Now” and “Total Access. Strong has worked as a sideline reporter for Fox Sports Net covering PAC-10 football, AVP pro-beach volleyball and Poker. She aslo covered the Poker Championships for NBC Sports and was a sideline reporter for the International Pool Tour. Strong hosted various shows for The Game Show Network and Outdoor Life Network, and helped launch the Directv Sports Mix for Directv’s innovative Mix channels.
More recently, Strong decided to pursue another passion of hers, YOGA. She first fell in love with yoga when she was in college. “I needed ONE credit to graduate and decided to take a yoga class. I thought….lying on a floor for an hour? How hard could it be?” That yoga class not only sealed her diploma, it changed her life forever.
Yoga helped Strong repair and prevent injuries while playing collegiate volleyball at LMU and then later as a professional beach volleyball player on the AVP tour. “Yoga has been my grounding force throughout my career as a journalist and an athlete.” It has also inspired Strong to open The Green Yogi, an eco-chic power yoga studio in North Manhattan Beach, designed to inspire conscious living and quality yoga.
Strong now shares her time between both the NFL studios and The Green Yogi, teaching three power yoga classes a week in her beautiful light-filled studio just blocks from the beach. As part of her commitment to the Manhattan Beach and South Bay communities, she helped launch the MBWIB One-2-One Mentoring program, and hopes to continue to inspire growth and consciousness in her community. “Opening my yoga studio was a major transformation for me. It was unknown territory. I had to fly to San Francisco to find mentors to help me learn about running a studio. I wanted to give women in the South Bay the tools to find mentors in their own community. It’s about women empowering other women to be great! Imagine how successful we can be if we share our knowledge and uplift those around us.”
